The term "Barena" refers to the lagoons and marshland that originally characterized the Venetian territory in Italy. Hunting, fishing and farming were the way of life and Barena Venezia, founded by Sandro Zara in 1961, strives to honor the very capable ancestors of this region by creating practical and exquisite clothing inspired by these past generations.

All of the production is done in Italy and the use of fine wools, linens and silks sets this brand apart. The women's line was introduced more recently with Francesca Zara joining the family business, and she has melded the historical influence with a modern and unconventional femininity.
