Some might consider it a bit of a checkered past, but shortly after its inception in the early 80s, Stone Island (or “Stoney” as it is fondly known) gained the bulk of their notoriety from “terrace casuals” or hooligan football culture in the UK. It seems that the sometimes violent and disruptive fans preferred to don the designer sportswear rather than draw unwanted attention from police or rival fans by wearing team colors.

In fact, Stone Island is Italian in origin, started in 1982 by Massimo Osti. It has always boasted innovative and techy styles, and of course, the highly sought-after, removable compass brand patch. That patch is still a major symbol of street style in the UK and more recently Stone Island has gained momentum over here in the States, due, in no small part, to a collab with Supreme and a new LA flagship store, in addition to some major players in the hip hop community wearing the label.
